The University of Virginia Bookstore Expansion was designed to sit atop an existing three-story parking garage. The design provides additional space for the bookstore, including enlarged clothing, computer and technical support departments, food service, new staff offices and storage. Located at the same level as an existing main retail floor, the addition did not require substantial modification of the existing Bookstore layout, allowing it to remain open throughout construction with minimal disruption.
Silman provided structural engineering services for the design and construction of the addition. A new steel-framed structure was added over the existing precast concrete parking garage without adding load to the existing structure. An exterior lateral bracing system was required, integrated within a carefully unified brick façade, the appearance of which kept with the University’s carefully maintained historic standards.
