Historically used as a lumber storage shed, US Navy Building 173 (c. 1917-1921) consists of two freestanding sheds with a connecting roof supported on wood trusses.
Silman performed an initial investigation of the structure, including an observation of the material conditions and initial recommendations, and provided adaptive reuse design of the Lumber Shed into ‘Pavilion 1’ – a two-level, 34,700-squarefoot, glass retail pavilion for The Yards development on the Anacostia River.
