The site for this new police precinct is located over an inactive rail line in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. The programmatic needs of the station house – offices, space for common areas, training rooms, booking areas, and a secure detention area – are organized within a series of stacked boxes. The new building is designed to exceed the requirements for LEED Silver certification.
The primary lateral system of the concrete-on-metal-deck building consists of concentric braced frames concealed within portions of the exterior opaque walls.
One of Silman’s main challenges involved coordinating interactions between the main structure and the precast concrete panel facade system. Because of the building’s shape, various cantilevers and overhangs required special attention during design. Limiting deflections of those same cantilevers and overhangs posed an additional challenge.
