Cathedral School

New York, NY

Silman has provided structural engineering services for this independent school for nearly two decades. One project involved documenting existing conditions and designing alterations to the existing school, including enlarged ground level window openings and the installation of a new commercial kitchen.

The firm’s engineers have also worked on interior and exterior surveying and the design of a temporary roof structure for the north transept. More recent work has entailed classroom alterations, MEP upgrades, and the design of a new catwalk in the central and north attic spaces. Silman also provided a conditions assessment of the terrace stair masonry walls.

In 2019, Silman completed work on a new two-story addition located to the south of the existing school. This addition provides a new entry and elevator, a new maker space and media lab, and expands the school’s existing dining facilities. The new addition’s structure is concrete slab on metal deck on steel framing. This framing bears on new columns on the east, south, and west and on an existing load-bearing wall on the north side.

Silman also provided structural engineering services for associated alterations to the existing adjacent structure, which included the removal and replacement of an existing stair along with new steel lintels at new or modified openings in the existing north wall.
