The project team salvaged and incorporated 425-foot long rail tracks along with structural columns from the sugar factory to serve as a backbone for the catwalk. New cantilevered steel framing supports a precast concrete walkway.
Spanning five block along the East River, this extensive waterfront park re-purposes salvaged artifacts from the Domino Sugar Refinery complex. These historical artifacts include screw conveyors, a bridge hoist, a crane platform, and four 36-foot-tall cylindrical syrup tanks, proud remnants of Williamsburg’s industrial past.
The park also features an elevated catwalk abutted on one end by two salvaged 80-foot-tall gantry cranes once used to unload raw sugar. The bright painted steel of the stabilized cranes now welcomes visitors to the park’s north entrance.
Silman is currently working on the adaptive reuse of the historic 1880s Domino Sugar refinery building, which is intended for use as office space once complete.
