Lincoln Memorial

Washington, DC

In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Memorial in 2021, the structure is undergoing multiple phases of repairs as well as improvements to its visitor center. Silman is providing structural investigation, design, and construction administration services for all phases. The first phase of work includes exterior masonry restoration and replacement of the memorial’s roof.

The second phase will improve the visitor center by greatly increasing the available space for interpretive exhibits, restrooms, and gift shop. The new visitor center will also highlight the monumental reinforced concrete structure that supports the building, the “Undercroft,” by exposing its space and features to the public.

The memorial’s accessibility will be improved by adding a second elevator to its Statuary Chamber. Prior to all work on the new design, Silman completed a Historic Structure Assessment Report for the entire structure.

Separate from this contract, Silman has been involved in task orders to rehabilitate the Lincoln Memorial to provide accessible ADA spaces, restrooms, and a pathway; provide design of perimeter security elements; and perform an analysis and design for the aesthetic relighting of the memorial’s interior and exterior.
