Quirk Hotel

Richmond, VA

The Quirk Hotel is a boutique hotel housed inside a historic structure built in 1916 as the J.B. Mosby and Co. dry goods store. Situated at West Broad Street and North Jefferson Street, the hotel is near Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and is in the heart of downtown Richmond’s bustling arts and design district. It features grand arched ceilings, original maple floors, and other classical architectural details.

The renovation included the partial removal and permanent stabilization of an existing adjacent structure to create a 3-story open-air atrium. Silman also designed interior modifications for vertical circulation and building infrastructure support.

As the structural engineer of record, Silman’s effort focused on facilitating the architect and owner’s vision for the hotel while limiting invasive structural modifications. This was achieved through careful collaboration and planning with the design team as well as thorough knowledge of existing building codes.
