This new cross-disciplinary academic building at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will be the campus hub for design-based learning, featuring design studios, collaboration spaces, and fabrication facilities. A large central atrium will let in natural light and facilitate circulation at the lower level.

Silman designed a structural system to complement the pavilion-like vision for the building. Open interiors and long structural spans will be used to create a flexible academic environment; exposed structural steel framing throughout will contribute to the openness of the layout. Twin 30-foot cantilevered steel canopies will highlight the center’s main entrances.
