Silman provided structural engineering services for the investigation, analysis, and renovation of Kline Chemistry Laboratory (KCL), a 1960s concrete building designed by Philip Johnson.
This project involved replacing existing mechanical systems, enlarging an existing rooftop mechanical penthouse, and adding two new elevator/stair cores exterior to the original building footprint.
The brick facade bordering the building’s the interior courtyard was replaced with a new glass and aluminum curtain wall, providing improved daylighting and orientation for occupants. The building was redesigned with a LEED Gold certification goal.
